East Africa Food Crisis

WE DON'T WANT A FAMINE IN AFRICA
East Africa is facing its worst drought in 60 years. Millions of people across Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia are at serious risk. Poverty, war, climate change, lack of funding for agriculture, and rising food prices are all factors in what the UN calls “the worst food crisis of the 21th Century”.
The United Nations had announced part of Somalia in famine conditions in July and September 2011. That means more than two people per 10,000 die each day, acute malnutrition among children is above 30 per cent. Though the UN has officially dropped the famine status of Somalia, the food crisis conditions remains very critical.
Thanks to people like you, Oxfam Hong Kong has so far helped more than 2.5 million people in the region, contributing more than HK$10 million to the effort.
Oxfam needs you to help stop the food crisis
Oxfam does not only provide life-saving water, food and basic sanitation, but also support for the long term. As early as March 2010 with a grant of HK$1.9million, we began supporting people in Oromiya Region of Ethiopia in these areas: provision of clean water, public health, cash for work, and livestock support for more than 11,000 households.
Here is a summary of some of the work we are doing in East Africa:
- Providing an emergency water supply and repairing water systems
- Running cash-for-work projects for better infrastructure so people can buy food
- Safe sanitation and health promotion to prevent disease
- Water, pastures, vaccinations and medical treatment for livestock
Oxfam has ranked the crisis a “Category One” crisis and is launching its largest ever appeal in Africa to prevent further suffering, and to prevent a famine from happening.
In the current crisis circumstances, international support and funding will be key to ensuring lives currently at risk are saved.
