Tropical Storm Ketsana roared across 10 regions of the Philippines on 26 September. In Manila, the storm brought the heaviest rain in more than four decades and dumped more than a month's worth of rain in just 12 hours. The resulting landslides and flooding have left at least 240 people dead. About 1.8 million people have been affected by the storm which is now heading to Vietnam, another country vulnerable to natural disasters and where five high risk provinces will be potentially affected. More than 160,000 people in Vietnam have already been evacuated.
Oxfam now has 3 teams conducting assessments in the Philippines and is targeting its assistance for 10,000 families, but this may increase. Our priority focus will be on water, food and public health, especially for impoverished urban people, women, and girls, who are badly affected by and often less assisted in disasters.
For Vietnam, Oxfam’s emergency response team is now ready for deployment and is closely working with government and NGOs in preparing for the possible impact of the typhoon on the most vulnerable groups.
Oxfam Hong Kong plans to allocate HKD 400,000 to the responses in the Philippines and Vietnam.
