Name: Donald Lam (Bachelor of Social Sciences, The University of Hong Kong)
Placed Unit/Team: Hong Kong Unit/ Communications Team
Placed Period: 12 October 2009 to 16 April 2010
My six months with Oxfam Hong Kong has really been a valuable experience. During my internship in the Communications Team, I got many chances to explore different roles within the field of events promotion. I had a variety of task at hand including contacting different internet provider companies to seek sponsorship of advertisement site. This was a new challenge for me and the experience helped develop my own inter-personal and communication skills, which will undoubtedly be important to my future career.
I was appointed to manage a media analysis project, involving collecting and analysing information about various newspapers and magazines. The results were used to generate a database. This particular project occupied over two thirds of the time of my internship and was a great learning experience. The work involved contacting different media groups and occasionally meeting their sales department to collect necessary information. It was the first time I had ever been required to examine the nature, content, style and target groups of various media organisations, which was a very interesting experience.
Oxfam Hong Kong provided me a great environment to work as an intern, especially under the supervision of Ms. Melanie Chan. She gave me opportunities to work on different tasks and was very helpful and supportive in facilitating my learning. I have learnt more about the operation of such a well-organized NGO through my internship, and this definitely has provided me with a much greater insight into my future career path.
