Name: Sybil Lau (Bachelor of International Communication, Macquarie University, Australia)
Placed Unit/Team: Policy, Campaigns and Communications Unit/ Communications Team
Placed Period: 16 December 2009 to 5 February 2010
Working as a Communications Assistant in the Policy, Campaigns and Communications Unit has been a fruitful and meaningful experience for me. During the past 2 months, I have assisted in the advocacy of the main three topics that the Unit is working on - Climate Change, Fair Trade and Corporate Social Responsibility.
I was involved in extensive media analysis and news research regarding the topic of Climate Change and Fair Trade. I was given the chance to write three articles as the media material for the Fair Trade Event. They were also used as publication pieces for the bimonthly magazine - MoKung Chinese magazine. During the past 2 months, I also had opportunity to communicate directly and handle the media and reporters in discussing the publishing of related media materials of the campaigns. The most fun part of my internship with Oxfam Hong Kong was the time I spent assisting the organisation of the ‘Chinese New Year Cooking Event’ in cooperation with the Campaign Team to raise the awareness of the general public on the importance of Fair Trade.
The internship has undoubtedly provided me an excellent opportunity to test my abilities and limitations. It has given me unavoidable opportunities which have encouraged me to be more out-spoken and representative of myself and the task that I was assigned to complete, especially in times of discussions and negotiations.
The position as a Communications Assistant has provided me a valuable chance to gain a thorough understanding of the field of media and communication. I found some working tasks to be familiar in methodology, resembling what I have studied in college. My internship allowed me to put all the theories that I have studied into actual practice, thus this experience has been unique in so many ways.
