Oxfam and other aid agencies supported the National University of Laos, National Economic Research Institute and National Agriculture and Forestry Research Institute to host the Second National Research for Development Forum on ‘Getting Ready for the ASEAN Economic Community’ on 16-17 December, 2015, at the National University of Laos. The forum highlights the significance of academic research in policy-making and the country’s development. It was attended for the first time by the Deputy Prime Minister, His Excellency Somsavat Lengsavad.
About 100 participants from the central and provincial government, academic institutions and non-governmental organisations joined the forum. Oxfam’s partners, the National University of Laos and the Yunnan Agricultural University of China, presented their joint research findings on the Chinese agricultural investments in Laos, and made recommendations to the policy makers of both countries.
Mr. Lengsavad even took the opportunity, together with the Deputy Ministers of Agriculture and Forestry, Planning and Investment, Energy and Mines, and Science and Technology, to meet separately with the Chinese delegates from the Yunnan Agricultural University and Oxfam Hong Kong. Mr. Lengsavad welcomed the participation of Chinese delegates to the forum, and highly recognised the importance of our research in policy-making.
