The Oxfam Rice Event is one of Oxfam Hong Kong (OHK)’s major annual fundraising events. This year carries special significance as it marks OHK’s 50th anniversary, celebrated under the theme “Empower Smallholder Farmers. Change Lives with an Oxfam Rice Packet.” The event will be taking place across various districts in Hong Kong over several consecutive weekends on 9, 10, 17 and 24 May, and concurrently in Macau on 16 –17 May.
Funds raised will support Oxfam’s poverty alleviation projects, with a particular focus on empowering smallholder farmers in Chinese Mainland to adapt to climate change, strengthen their livelihoods, and pursue self-reliance.
In an exciting new collaboration, OHK has partnered with OpenRice to feature its popular icon, “Rice Boy” in launching special Oxfam Rice Packs and gift sets for the first time. These specially designed products for the Oxfam Rice Event 2026 are now available for pre‑order.

climate change threatens the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in chinese mainland
your support can make a real difference
Since 1987, OHK has been implementing rural poverty alleviation and smallholder development projects in Chinese Mainland, putting into practice the spirit of the Chinese proverb, “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.” To date, our projects have extended across 22 provinces, supporting more than 3.8 million smallholder farmers to improve their livelihoods and development capacity.
In recent years, intensifying extreme weather caused by climate change has been exacerbating global food crises, poverty, and inequality. Chinese Mainland is among the countries most severely affected, with smallholder farmers and herders—whose livelihoods rely heavily on natural resources—being particularly vulnerable to crop failure and income instability.
OHK has been focusing on the livelihoods of smallholder farmers, providing comprehensive support to empower them to combat the escalating poverty caused by climate change. Through our projects in Chinese Mainland, other developing countries in Asia, and East African countries, we help smallholder farmers build sustainable livelihoods. We equip them with a range of agricultural techniques to better withstand drought conditions, ensuring more stable yields and income security even in extreme weather.

Support women to learn new farming techniques - Bring new hope to the sustainable development of rural communities
Women from Fengzhengshan Village, “We are not just people who farm the land – we are people who transform the land!”
In the mountainous regions of Yunnan, frequent droughts and land degradation linked to climate change have made farming increasingly challenging for smallholder farmers, resulting in unstable incomes.
To help farmers combat these challenges, OHK and its local partners have launched a “Conservation Tillage” pilot project in the village. Farmers are learning new farming techniques, operating seeding machines, and leading their communities towards sustainable agriculture.
Most inspiring is that the women of the village operate these machines themselves. With courage and persistence, they have refined techniques that work best across different lands and seasons. In doing so, they’ve shattered the stereotype that “women don’t understand machinery”, improved their harvests, and strengthened their families’ incomes. Even more importantly, they are now sharing this knowledge with neighbouring villages — helping even more smallholder farmers build hope and resilience.

Innovatively Combining Rural Resources with Traditional Wisdom to Expand Diverse Livelihoods
Smallholder Farmers from Wangjinzhuang Village, “We are not just people who farm – we are also the ones who watch over the seeds!”
In Wangjinzhuang Village in Handan, Hebei Province, the increasingly frequent heavy rains and droughts brought by climate change have made it difficult for traditional crops to grow, undermining villagers’ livelihoods.
Since 2017, OHK has supported the conservation of traditional agricultural varieties, helping farmers cultivate climate‑resilient crops. Over the past decade, the community has established a seed bank preserving 171 traditional local varieties. At the same time, villagers have revived the historic stone terrace agricultural system, recognised by the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System in 2022.
In recent years, OHK has worked with villagers to explore innovative approaches, combining modern technology with traditional rural wisdom. These efforts include introducing smart irrigation systems for steep terrace fields, adding modern bacterial agents to donkey manure compost to enhance soil fertility, and using tools such as drones, mobile apps and VR tools to strengthen community’s capacity to adapt to climate change.

Supporting Community-Rooted Initiatives to Forge Their Own Path Towards Sustainable Development
Villagers of Shibanhe Village, “We are not just recipients of help – we are the people transforming our own destiny!”
In Shibanhe Village, Hezhang, Guizhou Province, a rare cold snap in 2008 destroyed almost all the local crops. OHK responded immediately with emergency relief, beginning a decade long journey of supporting the community.
Once the crisis passed, Oxfam worked with villagers to identify priority needs. The first priority they set was to improve environmental hygiene: building sanitary toilets and separating living areas from livestock. As a result, the risk of children falling ill due to poor sanitary conditions dropped drastically, and villagers saw the impact of “transforming their homeland” with their own hands.
Oxfam then supported improvements in livestock farming and the cultivation of diverse cash crops, reducing dependency on a single crop and enabling more stable livelihoods. When the project concluded, OHK donated RMB100,000 to establish a “Community Development Fund” managed independently by the villagers. The fund supports cattle, sheep, farming tools, and emergency medical needs, while fostering collective resource management.
Years of hard work have begun to bear fruit. Today, Shibanhe Village has grown into a thriving livestock‑rearing community with per capita incomes exceeding RMB10,000. Rural tourism is developing, allowing villagers who once migrated for work to return and start their own businesses. The community has shifted from receiving help to driving change.
