While the region has the world's largest resources of gold, diamonds, platinum, uranium, titanium and iron, the benefits of these natural resources are not reaching most people, who face a range of crises, from poverty to drought, social exclusion, corruption and AIDS. An estimated 22.4 million people are living with HIV in the region: about two thirds of the global total. In 2008, AIDS killed approximately 1.4 million people in sub-Saharan Africa and 1.9 million people became infected with HIV.
Oxfam Hong Kong’s work in Southern Africa focuses on sustainable livelihoods and security in the context of chronic food insecurity and HIV and AIDS in Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia.
This work includes:
- reducing poverty through effective programmes which address causes of chronic food insecurity and the impact of HIV and AIDS
- reducing the loss of lives and livelihoods through timely and improved emergency response and disaster preparedness
- mainstreaming gender equity and basic rights in all Oxfam programming
