 About our work

In Mainland China, the household registration system (Hukou) and unequal access to education and social resources have given rise to two vulnerable groups: left-behind children in rural areas and migrant children in cities. Left-behind children often lack parental care due to parents working away from home, while migrant children face limited support as their parents work long hours under financial strain. Both groups encounter challenges in learning, safety, personal development, and social integration.

Oxfam and its partners support these children by improving family and school education, promoting community inclusion, and expanding development opportunities. These efforts aim to uphold children's rights and create a fairer, more supportive environment for their growth.

Change Takes Root in Migrant Communities

Yingying said, “Taking part in community service with my children not only teaches them to share and give, but I believe it’s also the best kind of love-based education. And through this journey, I’ve grown as well.”

Rainbow Library — A Growth Hub for Migrant Children

May more libraries like the Rainbow Library emerge in communities where they are needed, bringing colour to the lives of migrant children and those around them, while fostering interaction and inclusion among families, schools, communities, and society at large.
