Discrimination against women continues to fuel the inequality and poverty many of them experience. And disability of any sort and the intersectionality of other factors can leave them further marginalised.
That's why together with our partners, Oxfam supports women empowerment projects that involve both women and men to break stereotypes and fight for gender equity. With their abilities enhanced, women can actively and responsibly claim rights for themselves and their communities. We focus on empowering women and helping them become helpers, not merely recipients. And that's for a good reason: because to us, this can make a far greater impact than any material assistance ever could.
With your donation, we work with women to:
- Get on the path of self-reliance. With loans and seeds, tools, improved farming techniques and business training, more women will be able to grow more food and improve their livelihoods.
- Participate in decision making. We create opportunities and offer platforms for them to make their voices heard.
- Fight against gender-based violence. We provide legal aid, shelter and livelihood support to survivors.
- Fight for gender equity through education, advocacy, community work and campaigns.
- Cope with disaster. We provide emergency relief to meet their immediate needs, and support them to restore their livelihoods.

How women are changing their own lives
“‘Now I have an income for my family every day!”
(Sailor,LAOs)
Sailor used to feed her family the vegetables and fruits she grew on her farm. She only made a small profit because of the fierce competition. With the help of Oxfam and our partner though, Sailor was able to access a small loan and discovered an opportunity to build her own mushroom growing business. She was put in touch with other local mushroom farmers from whom she learnt different planting techniques.
She now manages her own mushroom form with high income and supports others with the planning and construction of more local mushroom plantations.
Discrimination and ignorance can lead to the social exclusion of women living with disabilities and even difficulty finding employment.
To break the stereotypes around marginalised women with disabilities and to promote their social inclusion in China, Oxfam and our partner have collected stories about their experiences, and set up an exhibition showcasing powerful images and stories of these women in the workplace and how they're trying to live their dreams. We’re also offering training such as theatre training to empower and also build up a mutual support network of women living with disabilities.
“I hope to find more job opportunities, so I can support myself”
(Winnie,hong kong)
It’s difficult for many women from low-income households to find work because they are often responsible for taking care of their family members. On top of this, many of them also experience financial pressure.
We worked with our partner to launch the Mindful MaMa Programme, which provides mindfulness training to women from low-income households. This enables them to become junior tutors of mindfulness experiences, earn an income and boost their confidence. The tutors also organise mindfulness experiences for children from low-income families, and help them deal with pressure and build resilience.
