Oxfam Towerrun

Every step you take makes a difference to people living in poverty

THE OXFAM TOWERRUN, which takes place annually at the Macau Tower Convention and Entertainment Centre – the tallest building in the city – is a fundraising sports event that Oxfam in Macau has organised since 2014. This year marks the event’s 9th anniversary.

Participants will take up the challenge of running up 1,298 steps from the ground floor of the tower to the adventure deck on the 61st floor. It takes about 20 minutes to complete the Oxfam TowerRun.* That is equivalent to the time it takes for a herder in Qinghai – now impacted by climate change – to find water. And those experiencing drought in East Africa need to walk four times longer than this to fetch water.
*Estimated based on the average amount of time needed in past. For reference only.

Event Information

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is celebrated on 17 October every year. Oxfam hopes to raise public awareness about poverty and inequality on this meaningful day, and encourage all to join the fight against poverty.

The Oxfam TowerRun, which takes place annually at the Macau Tower Convention and Entertainment Centre – the tallest building in the city, is a fundraising sports event that Oxfam in Macau has organised since 2014; this year marks the event’s 9th anniversary. Participants will take up the challenge of running up 1,298 steps from the ground floor of the tower to the adventure deck on the 61st floor. Oxfam aims to raise funds through this event to support its poverty alleviation work worldwide.

The event includes individual and team relay challenges. Upon raising the minimum donation amount, participants can take part in the individual challenge, or join the team relay through their company or organisation. Not only can participants enjoy this exciting challenge, they can also raise funds to enable vulnerable communities around the world to become more self-reliant and improve their livelihoods.

This year, Hou Chon Sports Club/ Basketball team, Lululemon, and Life Project – our event’s Supporting and Fitness Partners – will provide pre-race fitness and running skills training to participants and the general public.

Special Measures

We will implement the following special measures in accordance with the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention’s ‘Special webpage against Epidemics’:

  1. All participants are required to have received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine at least 14 days before the race, i.e. 2 October 2022. In addition, participants are required to make their own arrangements to undergo a COVID-19 test and present proof of a valid negative COVID-19 test result (inclusive of the event day) before being permitted to take part in the race. Please check the event webpage for the latest nucleic acid testing requirements: www.oxfam.org.hk/towerrun
  2. Each category will be assigned to a designated gathering time. Participants from other categories will not be allowed to enter the Tower.
  3. Everyone who enters the venue should have their temperature checked as they walk through the temperature detection area and present their Macau health code; our staff will also use handheld infrared thermometers when necessary.
  4. If participants show COVID-19 symptoms, such as a fever, they may be asked to leave the event and he / she will be disqualified; the donations that have been raised will not be refunded.
  5. To avoid increasing your body temperature and being denied entry, please warm up in an open and well-ventilated area at the venue.
  6. Alcohol-based sanitizers will be provided at the entrances and booths.
  7. It is mandatory for participants and staff to wear masks throughout the event, except while warming up, during the race, eating, etc. Please try to stay at least one metre apart from others to keep a safe distance.
  8. All participants and working personnel who have had their temperatures checked will be given an Oxfam stamp for identification purposes.
  9. Participants are encouraged to use wrist towels if possible, and avoid touching the railings and other items with their bare hands.
  10. During the race, participants may need to use both hands to hold the railing to run up. Participants are encouraged to use the gloves provided by the Organiser.
  11. The venue will be separated into designated areas. For example, participants and staff will be able to enter the start point area; relatives, friends, the media and spectators will need to stay in other designated surrounding areas.
  12. The Organiser will control the flow of participants who enter the venue and limit the number of visitors to 50 per cent or less than the capacity of the venue. Some entrances may be closed to reduce crowds. Participants will be asked to line up in an open area and will need to keep at least one arm's length away from others.
  13. In order to avoid unnecessary gatherings, participants should leave the finish area as soon as possible after finishing the race.
  14. After participants have crossed the finish line, participants will not receive a medal on the spot but will need to pick it up in another designated area.
  15. Face masks and alcohol-based sanitizer will be provided at the elevator entrance for participants to use, and the elevator buttons will be disinfected every half hour.
  16. There will be marks on the elevator floor to ensure all maintain a safe distance. In order to avoid gatherings, the ceremony will be simplified, and the awards will be given after the event.
  17. If a large number of participants or staff show symptoms of COVID-19, the Organiser will notify the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. For guidelines on the matter, please refer to: https://www.ssm.gov.mo/PreventCOVID-19.
Notes
  1. All participants must be aged 18 or above on the event day.
  2. The Organiser will send a confirmation email to participants after they have registered successfully.
  3. The Organiser will send out ‘Notes for Runners’ to all participants by email before the event so all are informed of the arrangements, including the gathering time, event schedule and luggage storage services.
  4. Participants must ensure that their health is in good condition to join this event, and all participants must sign the Waiver Agreement before the race.
  5. Participants must follow the instructions from the Organiser during the event; if a participant is found to have broken the rules or is disruptive, Oxfam staff will request the participant to leave the venue immediately, and they will be disqualified.
  6. The results of the race will be announced after the event. The Organiser reserves the right to make the final decision; participants cannot contest the results. To learn more, please visit the event website.
  7. The event is subject to change without prior notice. The Organiser and partner organisations reserve the right to make the final decision on the rules of the event. Participants cannot contest the decisions that are made.
  8. Participants must submit all donations to Oxfam by or before 10 October 2022.
  9. All donations raised from this event will be donated to Oxfam. Donations will not be returned.
  10. In order to reduce administrative costs, donation receipts will only be issued for donations of MOP/HKD100 or above.
  11. If Typhoon Signal No. 8 or the Black Rainstorm Warning Signal is hoisted at 6 o'clock on the morning of the event, the event will be cancelled. Participants should pay attention to announcements on the event webpage and our Facebook page (Oxfam in Macau).
