Support smallholder farmers in coping with climate change and achieving self-reliance
The Oxfam Rice Event 2026 is Oxfam’s major annual fundraising event, aiming to mobilize public support to help smallholder farmers improve their livelihoods and confront climate change. Under the theme Empower Smallholder Farmers, Change Lives with an Oxfam Rice Packet, the event encourages the public to support poverty alleviation through the simple act of purchasing Oxfam Rice Packet, bringing long-term positive change to disadvantaged communities.
Funds raised will support Oxfam’s poverty alleviation projects, with a particular focus on empowering smallholder farmers in Chinese Mainland to adapt to climate change, strengthen their livelihoods, and pursue self-reliance. By improving farming conditions and securing stable income, smallholder farmers can protect their land and build a sustainable future for the next generation.
Climate crisis worsens poverty — Oxfam stands with smallholder farmers
In recent years, increasingly frequent extreme weather driven by climate change has had profound impacts on global food systems and grassroots communities, exacerbating poverty and inequality. Henry Tang, Director General of Oxfam Hong Kong said in his speech: “Climate change-induced extreme weather is becoming ever more severe. Yet Oxfam’s commitment to poverty alleviation remains unwavering. For many years, we have focused on the livelihoods of smallholder farmers and have provided comprehensive support to help them tackle climate-induced poverty. In Chinese Mainland, other parts of Asia, and East Africa, we have implemented projects that help smallholder farmers learn drought-resilient farming techniques, enabling them to maintain yields and secure income even under extreme weather conditions.”
