The 2025 Oxfam Rice Event Kicks Off Celebrity Rex Tso and Snow Suen Sell Oxfam Rice to Support “Fight Climate Change, Empower Smallholder Farmers”
The opening ceremony for the Oxfam Rice Event 2025, Oxfam's annual large-scale fundraising event, was held today (10 May) at YM² in Kwun Tong. The event will take place over several weekends starting today (10-11 May, 18 May and 25 May) at multiple locations across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and the New Territories. More than 70 stalls and approximately 3,000 volunteers will participate in the charity sales, which will also be held simultaneously in Macau on 24-25 May. This year’s event continues the theme of “Fight Climate Change, Empower Smallholder Farmers”. The funds raised will be used to support Oxfam's poverty alleviation projects, including helping impoverished communities adapt to climate change, improve their living conditions, and achieve sustainable self-reliance.
The opening ceremony was attended by officiating guests including (in no particular order): celebrity athlete Rex Tso, celebrity Snow Suen; Hugh Kam, Council Vice Chair Chairperson of Oxfam Hong Kong; Betty Pun, Director General of Oxfam Hong Kong; Henry Tang, Director of Operations of Oxfam Hong Kong; Michael Wong, Fundraising and Communications Director of Oxfam Hong Kong; Ivy Yeung, Director and Head of Consumer Division of Dah Chong Hong Holdings; Joseph Lau, Head of Corporate Communications of Dah Chong Hong Holding; Johnson Ma, Chief Licensing Officer of Medialink Animation International Limited; Gian Chan, Associate Director of Sanrio Global Asia Limited; Pamela Lin, PX, CSR & Office Manager of Deckers Brands; Maggie Sze, Marketing Director of TamJai SamGor Mixian; Kennis Wong, Human Resources & Administration Manager of Concept 4 Limited; Karen Lau, Head of Marketing and Communication, Zurich Insurance (Hong Kong) and Connie Cheung, General Manager of OpenRice Limited.
The increasing severity of extreme weather caused by climate change is further exacerbating the global food crisis, poverty, and inequality. Hugh Kam, Council Vice Chair Chairperson of Oxfam Hong Kong, state: "The Oxfam Rice Event is entering its 30th anniversary, and we are truly grateful for the support from various sectors of society. Oxfam has always focused on the livelihoods of smallholder farmers worldwide, supporting them through different programmes to enhance agricultural productivity and improve disaster risk management. For example, Oxfam has helped Nepali smallholders adopt advanced scientific rice cultivation methods to combat drought; in Ethiopia, we introduced worm composting techniques, which successfully led to the cultivation of high-quality maize, onions, avocados, coffee, and wheat, significantly improving both the quality and quantity of their harvests.”
Betty Pun, Oxfam Hong Kong’s Deputy General, stated: “Every bag of Oxfam Rice represents a shared gesture of goodwill to support smallholder farmers. Through the charity sale of Oxfam Rice, we can mobilise public support to bring positive change in society. Oxfam is dedicated to providing comprehensive assistance to help smallholder farmers resist the increasingly severe impacts of climate change. We are implementing smallholder development projects across mainland China, other developing countries in Asia, and East African nations, helping them learn various drought-resistant farming techniques so they can maintain their yields and secure their livelihoods even in extreme weather conditions.
Celebrity athlete Rex Tso and celebrity Snow Suen also called on the public to support the 2025 Oxfam Rice Event, in order to help smallholders farmers acquire cultivation skills and strengthen their disaster preparedness to cope with extreme weather. This support aims to assist them in living without poverty and achieving self-reliance in the long term.
