Oxfam Rice Event 2025 Kicks Off in Macau Join Terence Siufay in Supporting Smallholder Farmers
Oxfam’s flagship annual fundraising event, the Oxfam Rice Event 2025, will be held across Macau on 24 and 25 May. Now in its 14th year, the campaign continues under the theme “Fight Climate Change, Empower Smallholder Farmers”, raising funds through the sale of Oxfam Rice and specially designed gift sets to help smallholder farmers and impoverished communities worldwide adapt to climate change and improve their livelihoods.
The kick-off ceremony took place today (20 May) at the Macau Tower Convention and Entertainment Centre, with the presence of key supporters including Oxfam Ambassador Terence Siufay; Mr. Jose Alvares, Vice Chair of the Board of Director, Oxfam in Macau; Dr. Betty Pun, Director General of Oxfam Hong Kong; Mr. Henry Tang, Director of Operations of Oxfam Hong Kong; Dr. Michael Wong, Fundraising and Communications Director of Oxfam Hong Kong, Ms. Su Yu Ning, Secretary-General of the Bank of China Macau Volunteers Association, alongside representatives from corporate sponsors and supporting organisations. Together, they rallied public for smallholder farmers facing the growing challenges of climate change.
Mr. Jose Alvares, Vice Chair of the Board of Director, Oxfam in Macau, remarked: “We are delighted to celebrate the 14th year of the Oxfam Rice Event in Macau and are deeply grateful for the great support from our community. Oxfam has long been dedicated to supporting smallholder farmers around the world. Through our projects in mainland China, across Asia and in East Africa, we help farmers adopt drought-resilient agricultural practices that boost productivity and secure their incomes. As climate change accelerates poverty and food insecurity on a global scale, it is smallholder farmers – who contribute the least to carbon emissions – who bear the brunt. Oxfam is committed to empowering them with the tools and knowledge they need to build resilience and achieve lasting, sustainable livelihoods.”
Oxfam Ambassador Terence Siufay, a long-time supporter, also shared: “I strongly believe in I strongly believe in Oxfam's work to empower people by building their capacity and skills to improve their own lives. Proceeds from the rice sale directly support farmers by providing agricultural training and disaster preparedness - helping them build better lives and break the cycle of poverty.”
This year, 15 rice booths will be set up across Macau, supported by over 1,100 volunteers. In continued collaboration with Medialink Animation International Limited, Oxfam first time features the beloved British classic Mr. Men Little Miss on rice bags and gift sets —bringing a playful, heartfelt touch to the event while encouraging the public to show their support through meaningful action.
The event is made possible thanks to the generosity of numerous corporate and community partners, including Bank of China Macau (Principal Sponsor); DCH Foods (Oxfam Rice Sponsor); BCM Bank (Long Term Partner); CTM (Long Term Telecom Partner); MOME (Official Mobile Media Partner) and more. Oxfam extends its heartfelt thanks to all volunteers, sponsors, and partners for their unwavering support and contributions to the cause.
