Oxfam Trailwalker 2012 Kick-off Secretary for Food and Health Dr. Ko Wing-man and Wheelchair Fencing Gold Medalist Ms. Yu Chui Yee as Officiating Guests

Oxfam Trailwalker (OTW), one of the world’s greatest team events and one of Hong Kong’s most popular fundraisers, kicked off this morning, 16 November, and will run until Sunday, 18 November.  The Oxfam Trailwalker Kick-off Ceremony, held at 11am today, was officiated by Dr. Ko Wing-man, BBS, JP, Secretary for Food and Health, Ms. Yu Chui Yee, Paralympics Wheelchair Fencing Gold Medalist, Mr. Bernard Chan, Chairman, Oxfam Trailwalker Advisory Committee, Mr. Thomas Lynch, Senior Vice President, Head of Enterprise Risk Management, Asia Pacific, State Street Corporation, and Dr. Stephen Fisher, Director General, Oxfam Hong Kong.

More than 10,000 people will be on the trail during the event, which includes 4,800 walkers, 6,000 support team members, staff and volunteers. Since 1986, more than 73,800 trailwalkers have raised over HK$365 million to support Oxfam’s poverty alleviation work all over the world. The event has successfully developed into an international top-notch fundraiser, challenging walkers in 15 locations in 12 countries including Australia (Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney), Belgium, Canada, China (Hong Kong), England (South Downs and Yorkshire Dales), France, Germany, India, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand and Spain.

“Our theme this year is ‘Life changes with Oxfam Trailwalker’,” said Mr. Bernard Chan. “Oxfam Trailwalker is, indeed, a life changing experience. To complete the arduous 100km trail, participants start training ahead of time, changing their daily routines to get themselves well prepared for the event. This grueling challenge is also a commitment to change the lives of poor people and empower them to walk towards wellbeing and self-reliance.”

“I would like to thank all the participants and supporters for making the event a success. Through your generous donations, Oxfam is able to help thousands of people work their way out of poverty,” said Chan.

Dr. Ko Wing-man, Secretary for Food and Health, said that Oxfam Trailwalker had been receiving strong support from the HKSAR government and civil servants, with volunteer teams from all disciplinary forces in Hong Kong helping at the check-points. Volunteer doctors and nurses from Kowloon Central Cluster will also be on duty for the entire 48 hours, supporting walkers from start to finish.

Ms. Yu Chui Yee cheered for the teams and wished them good luck. “Oxfam Trailwalker is similar to the Paralympics. Both events demand your perseverance and team spirit. I believe every one of you, especially amputee Trailwalker Mr Fung Kam Hung and his team, would strive towards the goal of helping poor people with courage and determination.”

Oxfam Trailwalker is Oxfam Hong Kong's flagship fundraiser. This year 1,200 teams, comprising 4,800 walkers, will take up the 100km challenge in teams of four, aiming to finish within 48 hours.

The Start Point is at Pak Tam Chung in Sai Kung and the Finish Point is at Po Leung Kuk Jockey Club Tai Tong Holiday Camp in Yuen Long. The fundraising target of Oxfam Trailwalker this year is HK$30 million, all of which will go to support the agency’s poverty alleviation work.

**It is estimated that the first team will reach the Finish Point at Tai Tong Holiday Camp at about 8pm to 9:30pm tonight. The Closing Ceremony will be held on 18 November (Sunday) at about 2pm. You are cordially invited to report the event.
