A Christmas gift that helps others A pair of goats, a piglet, watermelons, a meal and safe haven
With Christmas and the holiday season just around the corner, Oxfam Hong Kong has a series of thoughtful gifts to choose from to make Christmas gifts even more meaningful. Members of the public can visit Oxfam Unwrapped website to purchase a unique gift on behalf of a loved one that can help transform the lives of people living in poverty. The family member or friend will then receive a special card telling them what gift was sent on their behalf and how it can improve the lives of those living in poverty.
This year, Oxfam Hong Kong is offering 15 attractive and special gifts through Oxfam Unwrapped that will go towards various areas of the agency’s poverty alleviation work. Prices range between HK$300 and HK$1,000. Gifts include a pair of goats (HK$600), through which recipients can not only sell milk but also pass on their offspring to other villagers to help more people to escape the poverty they face; and a piglet (HK$680) that can help improve the quality of pigs in villages through breeding improvement, thus increasing villagers’ incomes. Members of the public can also purchase a gift to help farmers improve farming conditions in drought-ridden areas in Africa by growing watermelons (HK$480), and provide migrant children in mainland China with a meal and safe haven (HK$430).
All donations received from these gifts will go directly into the projects they support (e.g. all funds raised from the ‘A pair of goats’ gift will go into our goat raising projects until they reach completion). Oxfam will allocate what is left from these donations (if any) into other poverty alleviation projects to respond to the needs of people living in poverty in a more flexible manner.
