RAISE FUNDS REDUCE POVERTY

This event has ended. Thank you for your support!

Introduction

It has been a truly challenging year with the COVID-19 outbreak, and we are still grappling with the virus. With lack of basic hygiene and epidemic prevention facilities, the poorest and marginalised group locally and in some countries are facing even higher degree of threat.

The COVID-19 has lasted for more than one year, making big impact on our economy in Hong Kong. Early this year, the unemployment rate reached its highest in 16 years – over 7 per cent1. Many low-income families are starving from insufficient meals and some were even forced to sleep on the streets. The economic downturn and unemployment wave do not last for a short time. Therefore, the unemployed grassroots may only borrow money for their living and suffer from irregular income and may get into debt crisis.

Meanwhile, India, located around 3,600 kilometres away from Hong Kong, is facing a deadly new wave of COVID-19. In the past few weeks, the country was recording over 300,000 cases and around 4,000 deaths every day over a period of a few weeks2. Countless people have been unable to access treatment due to lack of medical support facilities like hospital beds and ventilators etc.

The donations raised by “Raise Funds, Reduce Poverty!” will be allocated equally to support poor and vulnerable groups in Hong Kong and India affected by COVID-19. 50% of the donation will be donated to Oxfam Hong Kong’s “Food Support Project for Low-Income Families” to support the grassroot families in Hong Kong affected by COVID-19. The remaining 50% will be used to support Oxfam Hong Kong’s COVID-19 relief work in India. Please join us in this meaningful challenge to spread love and positive energy!

HONG KONG: OHK’S FOOD SUPPORT PROJECT FOR LOW-INCOME FAMILIES

Wai Lan’s husband – the breadwinner of the family – works 12-hour night shifts to support his family of three. Their rent and utility bills usually take up 60 per cent of the family’s income, so Wai Lan tries to cut costs in other areas of their lives. She has had to cut back on buying toys for her daughter – even ones that cost HK$10 – because that’s money that could be spent on a meal; in fact, that is what they spend, on average, on each meal.

In the past, she was only able to cook simply and prepare the same dishes over and over again because Wai Lan’s daughter was a picky eater and they had very little space to cook. Soon after joining the project though, Wai Lan learnt new ways to mix and match different ingredients and is overjoyed whenever she sees how much everyone enjoys the healthy meals she now prepares.

‘When my daughter eats now, she always gives me a thumbs up and says, “Mommy, yummy, yummy!”’ Wai Lan recounted excitedly. She now experiences a satisfaction she has never had from cooking.

When a crisis like the coronavirus hits, it is the poorest who suffer most. Faced with financial pressure, many families cut food costs to save money; but this often translates into poor nutrition, especially for their children. Each household which joins ‘Give a Meal: Oxfam's Food Support Project for Low-Income Families’ receives four meal kits a week that are specifically designed and recommended by a dietitian for six months. The dietitians also equip project participants with basic knowledge on nutrition and healthy eating so that after our project ends, they will still be able to make nutritious meals on a budget.
