[Eat Fair Campaign] Infinite Food Design Challenge (Hong Kong) —Design lunch sets for grassroots elderly and cleaning workers to promote “Eat Fair” Culture
(16 May 2026, Hong Kong) How can students understand that poverty is not just a set of statistics, but a lived daily reality? Organised by Oxfam Hong Kong, “[Eat Fair Campaign] Infinite Food Design Challenge” encourages students to explore food design as an entry point to everyday life, guiding them to consider the real nutritional, financial, and practical constraints faced by grassroots communities, and to transform empathy into feasible solutions.
The final round of the competition was successfully held today. Ten finalist teams from primary and secondary schools prepared their dishes on site, presenting lunch sets thoughtfully designed for grassroots elderly people and cleaning workers. Beyond evaluating the dishes themselves, the competition placed strong emphasis on students’ understanding of the needs of their target groups. Designs of the dishes were required to be affordable, nutritionally balanced, and practical. The champions of the secondary and primary school categories were Ho Wai-gei from Our Lady's College and Wen Yin-fung, Leung Yi-shun, Abrar Umm Abiha from Pui Kiu Primary School respectively.
Enthusiastic participation from 120 schools
The competition is part of the 2025/26 Eat Fair Campaign education initiatives, aiming to raise awareness among students and the wider public of the food-related challenges faced by the underprivileged groups. By incorporating concepts of food waste reduction and sustainable diets, the programme seeks to promote a culture of “Eat Fair”. The competition received an enthusiastic response, with 900 entries submitted by 120 secondary schools, primary schools, and kindergartens.
All finalist teams prepared diligently and practised repeatedly before the competition. Teams cooked a variety of dishes for the judging panel to sample on site. Members of the judging panel included Dr. Terry Leung, Director of Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan Programme of Oxfam Hong Kong; Ms. Connie Cheung, Senior Director of OpenRice; Mr. Wong Siu-man, Executive Committee Member of the Hong Kong Island School Heads Association; Ms. Lam Pui-yee, Vice‑Chairperson of the Kowloon Regional School Heads Association; and Mr. Ngan Lit-chau, Officer of the Hong Kong Women Workers' Association. The event was also supported by various supporting organisations and prize sponsors.
In the Secondary School Category, the championship entry “Golden Pond Fish Delight,” designed by Ho Wai-gei of Our Lady’s College, was created for an elderly grassroots individual Grandma Ying. The design placed primary emphasis on the health and nutritional needs of elderly. Notably, tofu and chicken were crafted into the shape of a carp, presenting the dish like a work of art.
In the Primary School Category, the championship team from Pui Kiu Primary School—Wen Yin-fung, Leung Yi-shun, Abrar Umm Abiha—demonstrated strong teamwork. They designed the “Street Energy Station” meal set for a cleaner Uncle Ming. Featuring creative plating and nutritious dishes such as turmeric chicken brown rice rolls and stir-fried green beans with black fungus and garlic, the set aims to replenish workers’ energy for a demanding day. The entry fully reflects the team’s care and creativity toward their target beneficiaries.
Dr. Terry Leung, Director of Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan Programme of Oxfam Hong Kong, said: “In Hong Kong, poverty is increasingly intertwined with population ageing. As the elderly population continues to grow, many grassroots elderly people and outsourced cleaning workers still face challenges of limited incomes and high living costs, with food often being the first area where spending is reduced. The concept of “Eat Fair” seeks to respond to these structural constraints, so that everyone can enjoy food with dignity and choice, even within limited means.”
An award presentation ceremony was also held today, during which prizes were also presented to winners of the kindergarten colouring competition. Through drawing, kindergarten students designed lunch menus suitable for grassroots elderly people, cleaning workers, or primary school students, allowing them to engage with the concepts of Eat Fair and care for others from an early age.
